Morehead City is a working deep-water port with a serious offshore fishing fleet attached to it. The boats here tend to be bigger, harder used, and more expensive to get wrong.

Sportfish and Offshore Boats

Convertibles, express boats and large center consoles that run well offshore. These vessels carry substantial fuel, complex electrical loads and equipment that has to work a long way from help, which makes the systems side of the inspection as important as the structure.

On a sportfish I give particular attention to tower and outrigger attachment and the structure under it, fuel tank support and the condition of tank surrounds, cockpit and fishbox drainage, generator installation, and the electrical distribution feeding electronics, pumps and air conditioning.

Engine Hours and Running Gear

Offshore boats accumulate hours quickly and at high load, which is a different life from the same engine in a boat that idles around a sound. Hours alone tell you very little without the maintenance record and the condition of everything the engines drive.

Shafts, struts, bearings, couplings and steering gear get close inspection, along with exhaust systems, which fail expensively and often quietly on hard-run boats.

Where a vessel’s value or hours justify it, I will recommend oil analysis and a mechanic’s internal engine assessment alongside my inspection. That is a different discipline and I will say so rather than let you assume my report covers it.
